Most homeowners spend a lot of time choosing their living room floor. The bedroom, somehow, ends up as an afterthought — and that is a mistake we see often.
Your bedroom floor has a different job to the living room. You are on it barefoot most of the time. It is the first surface you step on in the morning. And if you are in an HDB flat, it directly affects the noise your downstairs neighbour hears when you pad around at 6am.
Getting the bedroom floor right makes a bigger difference to daily comfort than most people expect. Here is how to think through it.
The Bedroom Floor Is Different From Every Other Room
Kitchens and living rooms take the most punishment — heavy foot traffic, furniture movement, spills, pets, kids. Bedrooms are far quieter. You do not drag chairs across the bedroom floor or wheel trolleys over it.
What bedrooms need most is comfort underfoot and acoustic performance. A bedroom floor that amplifies every step you take — or transfers your footsteps to the unit below — is genuinely disruptive to both your household and your neighbours.
This changes which flooring properties matter most. Acoustic underlayment, underfoot softness, and surface warmth become the priority. Maximum wear layer thickness matters less than it does in a busy kitchen or office.
The Most Popular Bedroom Flooring Choices in Singapore HDB Flats
SPC Vinyl — Our Most Common Recommendation
SPC is by far the most popular bedroom flooring choice for Singapore HDB renovations right now, and it earns that position honestly. It is waterproof, dimensionally stable in humidity, and the pre-attached acoustic underlayment on most products does a decent job of cushioning footstep noise.
The click-lock installation is clean and fast. For resale HDB flats where there is existing tile underneath, SPC can usually go straight on top — no hacking, no downtime, no permit headache. You walk into a finished bedroom the same day.
One thing worth knowing: SPC’s rigid core means it feels firmer underfoot than laminate or engineered wood. In most bedrooms this is fine. If you are particularly sensitive to underfoot feel, ask us about the acoustic backing options — a thicker IXPE backing noticeably changes how the floor feels and sounds.

LVT — When Aesthetics Are the Priority
If you want something that looks a bit different from the standard SPC plank format, LVT gives you more options. Herringbone plank layouts, large-format stone tiles, wider planks — these are all easier to achieve with LVT.
LVT over a quality acoustic underlay performs comparably to SPC with pre-attached backing. The underlay adds a few extra millimetres to the total height, so factor that in when working within HDB’s 50mm floor height limit.
What About Engineered Wood?
Some homeowners want real timber in the bedroom — the warmth and character of an actual wood surface is hard to argue with. If you are in a consistently climate-controlled condo unit, engineered wood over a foam underlay is a viable choice and it genuinely feels warmer underfoot than any vinyl.
For HDB flats though, we are more cautious. Singapore’s humidity variance between day and night, and especially between air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned periods, puts more stress on wood than people realise. If the bedroom is not consistently air-conditioned, SPC is the safer option by a distance.
What About Carpet?
Carpet is warm, quiet, and comfortable underfoot. It also traps dust mites readily in Singapore’s heat and humidity — which is a real problem for anyone with allergies or asthma. We generally do not recommend carpet for Singapore bedrooms. If underfoot softness is the priority, a thick acoustic underlay beneath SPC or LVT achieves a similar feel without the allergen issue.
The Noise Question: HDB Upper Floors
If you are on an upper floor — which most HDB residents are — impact noise matters. Every step you take in the bedroom at midnight transfers through the concrete slab to the unit below.
The right SPC product with pre-attached IXPE backing achieves an IIC (Impact Insulation Class) rating in the range of 50–54, which is adequate for most Singapore HDB upper floors. If your condo MCST has stricter IIC requirements, a dedicated acoustic underlay added beneath the SPC lifts performance further.

Bedroom-Specific Practical Points
Watch Your Floor Height
HDB’s 50mm cumulative floor height limit applies to bedrooms the same as every other room. If there is existing tile underneath and you are adding 5.5mm of SPC plus an acoustic underlay, you are typically fine — but always confirm before committing. Wardrobe Bases and Built-Ins
If you have a built-in wardrobe or platform bed, you need to decide whether the flooring goes underneath the unit or stops at its edge. We generally recommend running flooring under built-in bases where possible — it keeps the installation cleaner and avoids visible gaps if the furniture is ever moved or replaced.
Bedroom Colour Choices
Warm, medium-toned planks — natural oak, warm beige, soft walnut — work well in most Singapore HDB bedrooms. They complement most furniture finishes and make the room feel grounded without being heavy.
Light grey or whitewashed finishes are popular for smaller bedrooms because they reflect more light and make the room feel larger. Very dark tones look dramatic but can make compact HDB bedrooms feel enclosed unless they are well-lit.
HDB Rules Worth Knowing
Overlaying new flooring on existing bedroom tiles is generally permitted for resale HDB flats, subject to the 50mm height limit. For BTO flats, dry area flooring can be installed from key collection without a permit — you do not need to wait.
