School flooring does not get as much attention as hospital flooring — but it probably should.
A Singapore school serves hundreds of children every day, across multiple activity types, often in the same physical space. The hall doubles as a PE venue, an exam room, and an assembly space. The canteen handles food service, wet cleaning, and heavy chair scraping in back-to-back sittings. Classrooms need flooring that children can sit on, clean easily, and that does not generate noise complaints from the rooms below.
Getting the flooring right in each zone makes a genuine difference to how the school operates, how long the floor lasts, and how much maintenance it demands over its lifecycle.
The Zones Are Very Different — and the Spec Should Be Too
The most common mistake in school flooring procurement is treating the entire building as a single category. It is not. Here is how we think about school zones:
Multi-Purpose Halls and Gymnasiums
This is the most specification-sensitive zone in a school. The hall floor has to perform across multiple activities — court sports, exercise, assembly seating, examinations, and sometimes dining or community events. And it has to do all of this while managing impact noise from children running and jumping.
Vinyl sports flooring is the most appropriate surface for most Singapore school halls. It provides the shock absorption needed to protect young joints during PE, consistent ball rebound for court sports, and slip resistance that does not rely on dry conditions.

When the same hall is used for non-PE activities, protective covers or mats should be placed over the sports surface to prevent damage from heavy chairs and stage equipment. This is standard practice for dual-use school halls.
Classrooms
Classrooms need a floor that is durable enough for daily chair scraping and foot traffic, easy to sweep and mop, and — on upper floors — does not amplify footstep noise to the room below.

Canteens and Food Service Areas
The canteen is the most demanding hygiene zone in a school. It combines food spills, wet mopping multiple times a day, heavy chair and table movement, and the need to meet NEA licensing requirements for food establishment surfaces.
Homogeneous vinyl with thermally welded seams is the right choice here. The seamless, joint-free surface can be cleaned thoroughly and withstands the commercial cleaning chemicals used in food service environments. Anti-slip surface grades are appropriate for canteen areas that get wet during service periods.
Corridors and Common Areas
Corridors handle the most concentrated traffic of any zone — entire school cohorts moving between classes at the same time, multiple times a day. Homogeneous vinyl handles this better than any other product long-term. Its through-colour construction means surface abrasion from hundreds of shoe soles daily does not degrade the floor’s appearance for many years.
Staff Offices and Administration Areas
Admin areas have lower traffic intensity and different priorities — a more professional aesthetic and acoustic comfort. Commercial LVT in a wood or neutral finish is appropriate, and provides a visual distinction from the institutional feel of corridor and canteen areas.
Safety Is Non-Negotiable
Schools have a duty of care to students that makes slip resistance a mandatory consideration, not an optional upgrade. Wet corridors during monsoon season, canteen spills, and unpredictable movement of children in gym sessions all create slip risk.
