Anti-Static Vinyl Flooring

Anti-Static Vinyl Flooring, also known as Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Flooring, is essential in industries where it’s vitally important for static control to protect static sensitive equipment, components and machines against damage from electrostatic charges.
Here’s what you need to know:

There is a rising demand in Singapore for Anti-Static Vinyl Flooring that protects sensitive equipment and products from electrostatic discharge (ESD) that is affordable, durable, easy to clean and maintain.

What Is Static Electricity?

Static electricity is generated due to a difference in the amount of electric charges within or on the surface of an object from the surrounding environment. The charge remains until it is able to flow away from the object via an electrical current or discharge.
Static electricity is built up when electrons from one objects jumps to another objects. For instance, when a person walks across a room, he/she will pick up electrons from the floor.
Electrostatic charges buildup is further exacerbated by dry environment. This is because water which is a good conductor will discourage static electricity buildup on surfaces.

Difference Between A Dissipative Floor And A Conductive Floor

An ohm is the standard unit of measurement for electrical resistance.
The higher the electrical resistance of an object the least it is able to eliminate the static charges.
Static dissipative flooring has an electrical resistance of 106 to 108 ohms. It allows the charges to move to ground more slowly and steadily than the conductive flooring.
Conductive flooring has an electrical resistance of below 104 ohms. Hence, charges flow more readily across the surface than the dissipative flooring.

Dissipative And Conductive Flooring – Which One To Use?

It depends on the individual requirements of the area and the equipment manufacturer’s recommendation for electrical properties of the flooring.
The flooring should have the ideal balance of dissipative and conductive properties that allows the floor to prevent static buildup to keep the workers safe as well as to ground static to protect the equipment or components in the room.

What Are The Commercial Areas That Require Anti-Static Flooring?

Hospital is one of the areas where having an Anti-Static Flooring is necessary. Patients’ lives could be put in danger if medical equipment isn’t working properly, or ceases to function during an operation or a medical diagnosis.
Another area where having an Anti-Static Vinyl Flooring is equally crucial is in the electronic components manufacturing plants where the products are very sensitive to static electricity.
